The Current Population Survey
The CPS has been in operation for decades. It is a monthly survey of
60,000 households with the primary purpose of collecting the data
needed to calculate the unemployment rate. It also collects data on demographics, wages, and so on.
The Annual Social and Economic Supplement
In March of each year, the Current Population Surve includes
dozens of extra questions that gather economic and social information
related to the previous calendar year, including detailed income
questions, health insurance and pension coverage, and employment
status. Answers to the questions asked in March 2006 (about the
calendar year 2005) are being released August 29th.
